Microsoft is bringing a new Media Player app for Windows 11. The app is currently in testing for Windows insiders in the Dev channel. The new media player is designed to support both audio and video playback.
The new media player app will be a successor to the classic Windows Media Player. However, it will replace the Groove Music app on Windows 11.
Microsoft has unveiled the new media player app in a blog post. The design of the app is arranged with Windows 11, including the icons, rounded corners, and the general layout.

A senior program manager, Dave Grochocki, explains,
“At the heart of Media Player is a full-featured music library that allows you to quickly browse and play music, as well as create and manage playlists. The update to the new Media Player will replace the Groove Music app.”
Inside the media player app, the user can browse and play music and also can create and manage playlists. Both in full-screen mode and the mini player option, it shows the album art and artist imagery.
As per the blog post, the Media player will support videos as well. Generally, in Windows 10 and Windows 11, there is a separate Films & TV app.
According to the blog post,
“All your content in the music and video folders on your PC will appear automatically in your library, but you can also tell Media Player where to look for additional content in app settings.”
In the app, you can browse, manage and watch the local videos. Also, the content that includes music and video folders on your PC will be seen automatically.
The app is designed to replace the Windows Media Player app that is still available in Windows 11. According to the company, this legacy app will be available in Windows Tools. Though it looks like the new Media Player for Windows 11 will be the primary option to watch or listen to the videos and audio.
