Even though the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 chips easily beat the competition, there is one aspect they still lack behind. And that is support for AV1 codec.
Samsung’s Exynos has had this feature for more than a year now. The Exynos 2100 was the first chip to bring AV1 Codec to Samsung’s advantage.
Well, this is about to change now, as Qualcomm plans to bring Samsung down. The next year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon is tipped to come with support for the AV1 codec. This makes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 the first Qualcomm’s SoC to support the AV1 codec.
What is AV1, and why is it important?
AV1 Codec is a technology that makes video streaming a more delightful experience. Your favorite streaming services, like YouTube, Netflix, and so many more use this technology. AV1 is 30% more efficient in terms of video compression than HEVC. Here, HEVC means High-Efficiency Video Coding, which is the current industry standard.
This means that the video experience of your device with the next year’s Snapdragon would be even better. AV1 is the new industry standard, and it is shocking that Qualcomm is still 2 years behind.
Although, the use of the AV1 codec is not new to the industry. Samsung and LG have been using this tech in their smart TVs for quite a while now. This technology has made its way into the mobile world now.
We think that it is going to change the video streaming domain in the mobile world. Samsung has been two years ahead in the use of the AV1 codec, and the experience in TV does bring more to the table.
If you want to get the best use of Netflix, YouTube, then the AV1 codec is a cherry on top. Plus, more streaming services like HBO Max are also testing the potential of the technology.
